Do You Have A General Question? Ask Steve!
Leave a comment at the bottom of this post with your question;
I will then add your question to this list and answer it.
|
|
|
| How long does it take to begin making money online? There is no simple answer to that question and it depends much on your current set of skills. I have a great article here which answers that question in detail. |
| Are there any systems you suggest for making money fast online? There really are none. Any offers that promise quick and easy money are at best over-hyped and at worst nothing but a scam. Internet marketing success first requires that you understand and know how to implement basic online marketing principles and skills. This part takes time; it is a learning process. Remember that many people spend 4 years learning a career in college. Internet marketing success does not take 4 years, but it can’t be achieved in a month or two either. |
| I’ve been posting ads now for weeks. I’ve posted hundereds of them and have not made any money yet. Can you help? It sounds like you have bought into one of the many “data entry” scams. You will have no luck at all posting your affiliate links to free classified sites. If you mean you are posting ads to Google AdWords, that is even worse becasue that is costing you money! AdWords is a VERY tough method to learn and not where beginners should start with Internet marketing. Now days, it is extremely difficult to make money with affiliate products unless you have your own website which you can direct traffic to. |
| What about using templates for my site? Here’s my standard answer for that one: IF you already know how to build sites and you want to take a shortcut with a template, that may be OK so long as you look out for bloated code and create all original content. However, if you are using templates as a means of skipping past the learning process for building sites, they won’t work well for you. The main reason is that you still will have to edit the templates and work your own content and offer into them. You’ll still need to know basic web design. Too many beginners think they can purchase a “template package” and then throw up a dozen sites very quickly. I only wish Internet marketing was that easy! |
| Should I add Google AdSense to my site? If your site is already selling your own products, I say no to adding AdSense ads. Why distract visitors from the real reason for the website. Also, I think having AdSense on a site which sells your products cheapens your offer. If your site has affiliate products, you may consider adding AdSense. But if you are already selling affiliate products on the site successfuly, usually your affiliate potential is greater for the site than your potential from AdSense. |
| Should I have a blog or a regular website? Both blogs and “regular” websites can be successful. For example, StevesClassroom.com is a WordPress blog and CactusCanyon.com is a simple, static website. The answer really depends on how the site will be used. Also, I like for my clients to make that decision based upon their needs and not whether or not they have basic web design skills. Beginners often choose blog formats because they don’t want to learn simple page design. This can work, but I don’t suggest handicapping one’s self by failing to learn simple page design. Additionally, in many cases it works quite well to incorporate a blog into a static site…that way you can enjoy the benefits of each. |
| What’s an easy way to add a shopping cart to my site? I am a firm believer in not putting the cart before the horse in this case. Sure, you could put a very robust shopping cart solution onto your site. But not only is the learning curve there fairly steep, there will be costs involved. In most cases the cart itself will have a monthly charge (1shoppingcart.com for example). Also, in order to take credit cards with such carts you will also have monthy merchant account fees. Instead, I suggest all new sites begin with a simple (and free) PayPal shopping cart. Sure, you may perhaps lose a few sales if that’s the only option you offer. But now days many people have PayPal accounts and PayPal does offer a “pay by credit card” option for those without a PayPal account. Once your site is making a few sales per day, then you can look at your options for using a more robust solution. |

Hi steve, have been checking out your site for about a week now, took the 3 day crash course, thank you for that. I am totally new to internet marketing. Now that i am unable to do the work I used to do due to arthritis, I have a lot of time on my hands, but no income. Have always thought about internet marketing, just didn’t know where to start and took no action. Now I am taking action, am ready to commit full time, have purchased a website domain with hosting for a year through “Godaddy”. Need help with the basics of website building….. well, with everything to be honest. Have been absorbing information everywhere I can and am truly overwhelmed about how much there is you need to know. I can’t afford your $67 a month membership as of yet, but was wondering if your “website pro ” package would help me with some basics, especially basic website building. Thank you for yor time, Bruce
Hi Bruce, Sorry I missed this comment! Yes, Real WebSite Pro is the way to go if you are just beginning. It’s filled with all the tutorials you need to get started…let me know if you have more questions.
steve
hey steve-
i had a question. what do you think of those websites that sell traffic? like “Get 100,000 visitors for just $159.99″…do you think they have value? i know that there are “tricks” to getting clicks with bogus softwares that some companies use, but say the company states it uses “only real people” visitors…thoughts?
Hi Anya,
That is a HUGE scam! Those companies have 2 businesses. One is selling traffic to you and other site owners…the other is paying people to click. They take your money and then use part of it to pay people from all all around the world fractions of cents to click click click click click the list of sites that folks bought the traffic for… their other business is called a “paid to surf” deal…they then pocket the difference.
Again, that traffic is absolutely worthless.
Hello,
I was wondering if you provide any discounts on Real Website Pro or Adsense Connection after signing up for the coaching services and becoming a platinum member.
Thanks,
Terry.
Hi Terry, I do in fact have a special going for that…it’s in my P.S. on this page:
http://stevesclassroom.com/blog/coaching-with-steve-weber/
Hello Steve. Wondering what is the difference between Wordpress.org and Wordpress.com. Do you think moving a blog from Typepad to Wordpress would be a good idea? I have their basic blog, and would need to upgrade to Typepad plus to add my domain. Thanks.
Hi Frank,
You don’t want to go the “free” route…there are too many limitations. Your best option is to get a low cost hosting account…like with hostgator for example. With it you can have the WordPress blog installed automatically. The hosting only costs $4 or $5 per month.
Here’s the link for more info:
http://stevesclassroom.com/blog/recommended-tools/#hosting
With hosting so low, it only makes sense to have your own site with your own domain which you have total control over to do with as you want.
As a beginner to internet marketing, which one of your products would you suggest I purchase first? Really enjoyed your 3 day crash course!
Hi Debbie,
Real Website Pro is the way to go for beginners. It covers the entire process. The best place to get it is at http://www.steveweber.us
Sign up for free there to the course and then you are presented with a special offer for Real Website Pro on the next page.
Let me know if you have questions,
Steve,
I registered a domain name….NYMTA.INFO Bluehost is the site manager. I want to ….I hope to develop this site for turist information and create a business and positive cash flow. I do not have all that much savvy with what I do next…HELP.
Hi Bill, With that area your biggest potential mistake is going to broad. You simply can’t make a new site too broad and expect it to rank well in the search engines. Also, that area has tremendous competition. It will be a steep mountain to climb probably even in smaller sub-niches within it.
Be sure you take my 3 Day Crash Course at http://www.SteveWeber.us There I explain more about niche selection and getting traffic.
Hi Steve,
It has been a while since last speaking with you. Hope all is well. Recently I developed a website http://www.cremationguide101.com. I went at it on my own, only because I have a little bit of knowledge on internet marketing. Also the coaching membership in the past was not affordable at the time.
If you get a chance, take a look at it and let me know what you think on a general basis. The topic of cremation is growing at a rapid pace, and because I know alot about it having spent years in the funeral business, I thought I would give it a go.
Your coaching membership now appears very attractive, an I am strongly considering it.
Thanks,
Rob S
Hi Rob,
I didn’t look at the SEO aspects, but the 2 things that really stuck out were all the wasted space you had above the fold…the pictures are way way too big and you have all that empty space at the top…above the fold is prime real estate on a web page. On my 1024×768 I had to scroll down on every page just to see any text…not a good thing.
Also, the scrolling banner probably should go….it too is wasted space and there is not a need really to show the address of a page someone is already on.
Otherwise, I think you may be on to a good thing providing you’ve researched the keywords well and have optimized well.
Next step: Get plenty of back links.
Steve,
What do you think of using SiteBuildIt to build my first site?
Thanks, I love this site you have, great job.
Scott
Hi Scott,
I’m no fan of going that route. They are expensive and have limitations that will limit you.
You mention “first site”. So I assume you plan more than one. That makes me even more sure you need to “bite the bullet” right now and learn that process. I describe here at this link how and why you want to use a host where you can host unlimited domains for just $7.95 a month: http://stevesclassroom.com/blog/recommended-tools/#hosting
Honestly, until you learn how to create simple sites and landing pages on your own, you will be very much handicapped in your efforts. I don’t know of any successful marketers who go in a few different directions who have to rely on wizards like that to make their sites.
Steve,
Thanks for the quick reply. I was debating on SiteBuildIt too, but I thought the cost was a bit high. I’m still developing my niche but I think I have it narrowed down. What do you recommend for landing pages etc.? I’m a free member of theTrafficPlan.com, but again I think with the replicated sites like that; there will be all of the same content floating around out there. This time I want to do all of this the right way. I made a stab at it a few years ago, about five to be exact and got overwhelmed and gave up. I did Ebay for a bit and had some good success but I’m not into that stuff. I look forward to your advice and I am on day one and a half of your three day course.
Take care,
Scott
Steve,
This is a hard thing for me to write. I have been working online part-time for 7 years. Lots of ups and downs, false starts and miscues. Invested way too much money in shysters and scam artists. But that’s in the past. I actually do make a fair amount of money from a website that I manage with a partner but I still have to work full time (in online lead generation, believe it or not) and my dream is to have my own portfolio of sites that I manage exclusively.
I own Dreamweaver, know PPC, know SEO, etc. I have about 20 sites that I have built over the years only one of which makes money and that I needed a partner to get myself to that point.
Here’s my problem. I am chronically scattered. I cannot get into that step 1, step 2 groove. I need a plan, a blueprint, something that I follow and do every day. But I am either all over the place or paralyzed.
I am a former ad executive and I am a pretty good writer. I have hired on elance for many projects so outsourcing isn’t a problem. I think that I have at least a few websites in niche categories that will be profitable with the right punch list or road map.I should be way further ahead than I am. And I know that I can do this so I won’t quit.
I get content, SEO, linking, PPC, Adsense, etc. It’s me I don’t get. I want to take one thing, do what needs to be done, see some results, keep growing, rinse and repeat.
I know that it is up to me but can you help with developing focus and the road map on which to apply that focus? Not afraid to work. God knows I’ve worked enough with little to show for it. Not afraid to spend money, just want to see results. And if I don’t perform, it;s my fault.
There, that was embarrassing. Just interested in your perspective.
Hi Scott,
eBay is a good learning ground. That’s how we started. You learn a lot of basic stuff there about PayPal, shipping, customer service, etc.
As for “landing pages”, I’m not sure what you have in mind. Do you mean for squeeze pages or AdWords landing pages? Here’s what I suggest for either:
These are usually very very simple in structure. Go out and find some you like and then create your own with what you like in the ones you find. When you learn Dreamweaver, making attractive landing pages is quite easy. Like I said, by their nature, they are quite simple in structure and are easy to make.
I hope that helps,
Steve
Hi J.T.,
The good news is that you are miles ahead of most of my students with all the skills you already have. “Online lead generation”….talk about a top-of-the-list skill!
Ok, you are a part of a working site. So you know one blueprint that works. Of course there are 100’s more which will work for you too.
I am wondering if your problem might be patience. Maybe you get bored or tired with something before you have given it a good chance?
Regardless, my following advice will be the same.
Use the best of your current skill levels to choose a niche, it’s site format, the marketing methods you’ll use and how you will monetize the site. Write these down! Next, consider your available time and what is a reasonable time line for the work. Get a calendar and fill in the time line steps!! This is vital. Now it’s up to you to follow it.
Here’s the deal…
There are no guarantees any given idea will work until you give it your best shot. For small niches, you may see the light of success in a matter of weeks or months. For larger areas, it could take many months. You must take this fact into consideration.
One of the biggest reasons most people fail is that they quit before they’ve given the process a good chance. It reminds me of the guy who sold the gold mine claim who had been digging for months and quit out of frustration. The next day the new owner finds the mother load while continuing to dig.
There is some skill involved in knowing how long to work at something before recognizing and knowing when to change direction. My suggestion to you is if you begin to feel frustration after a month of work, commit right then to at least another month of focused work or even two before changing direction. If the area is larger, then that time should be extended of course.
Maybe you won’t get it right the first time. But you will learn a LOT and be able to tweak the next path better.
Write down the plan with a clear head and follow it.
Keep in touch and let us know how it goes!
Steve
Hi Steve,
Thanks for the content on your blog.
I’ve come across your name a number of times on the PayDotCom forums of late…
Are you an administrator, or just plain helpful?
(Genuine question!)
Best regards
)
Graeme Sutherland
You are welcome Graeme,
No, I do not work for PDC….I just participate in the forum as a moderator.
First i want to say, thank you for all the emails you sent . . (they are all starred) so i can find them . .
one of your emails is titled: “THINK BIG WITH small NICHES”– AND –(by mistake i ERASED it! if you can find it and send it again to me i will be more than happy, but if not, no worries maybe later)– ANYWAY –
It really stresses how imperative it is to study SEO
so i bought a book: Search Engine Optimization an hour a day
by: Jennifer Grappone & Gradiva Couzin– –i’m half way completed and like McDonalds, i’m lovin it.
since 1997 i had a desire to work online,
SO THAT ABOVE EMAIL YOU SENT, BROUGHT THE ANIMAL OUT IN ME, because it spoke to me in a loud whisper: “This is what you need to know.”
i should of emailed you first before buying the book .. but what’s your take on it?
LASTLY: i want to get your product SEOx4 before november 10…any advice or words of encouragement i will appreciate . . Thank You Again Steve
Hi Robert, I just emailed you.
Yes, don’t forget! The coupon code save30 expires Nov. 10 for http://www.seo4x.com
I tried to register at http://www.weberforum.com, during registration I was not allowed to complete registration. Is there a problem with registering, please help, thanks.
Cynthia
That forum has been clobbered with spammers. I had to all but lock it up for now. It has a poor spam prevention system built into it.
I learned my lesson! If you build a forum, always go with the free phpBB forum. I have since used it for other forums and like it a LOT better. It’s much easier to manage.
I plan to start a new new build with phpbb when I get time.
Hi Steve – Just wanted to say that I’ve been learning a lot from your course materials and free tutorials. Through this learning experience I’ve disovered something interesting.
I did some research on keyword phrases for my website and found that I made it to googles first page! In fact, with specific keyword phrases I am listed as number 1! I’m not talking about random obscure phrases. I’m talking about first page ranking with 47K to 450K in the catagory.
However, the key phrases are not exactly for what I am selling, but for something I could easily produce with a little time and effort. I’m guessing that this could be that “niche” you are always talking about.
So here’s my question. Would it be wise to shift the entire focus of my website and optimize it for a new product or simply add a page and optimize that for the new product? Can you offer any advice for my situation?
Thank you,
Chris
Hi Chris, Without knowing your exact situation with the exact keywords, etc., I’ll give you a generic answer: If you can’t beat them join them!
If google throws something in your lap like that, go for it. I’d just keep things as they are. If you can add links or products to the well ranking page now, do it. Just don’t change that page too much so that it lowers it rank possibly.
Steve,
Thanks for the quick response and I like your answer! I would much rather add a page that focuses on that niche product than try to get a new site ranked. I’ll get to work on doing just that.
Thanks
Hi Steve,
Is there a free tool/service that will help me find the top search terms people are using to find a given product? For example, I want to optimize my website to let people know that I provide free “how to” videos on a specific piece of equipment. How do I know what search terms people are using to find information on that subject?
thanks,
Chris
Hi Chris, There is no simple or easy method. It will take research. Look in the iNichePro product you have access to and use that method. You will have to brainstorm and then use the iNichePro methods to check and verify the possibilities. Wish I had a simple and quicker answer.
Steve, Thanks for the reply. I know it’s going to take some research, so I’ll see what I can do to save my pennies and invest in your iNICHE PRO product.
Chris
Wait, which product do you have now? SEO 4X?
No, I purchased twitter-blast. It’s a great product with tons of good info but in hind-site, I should have went with iNiche. I think it would have been a better choice at this point in the game.
thanks:)
Actually, what you really need is SEO 4X. It includes iNichePro. SEO 4X takes you through the entire process of not only using the keyowords you find with iNichePro correctly, but also all the other on page and off page aspects of SEO and getting your site ranking well.
Be watching your email you have listed here in your profile. I am going to send you something right now.
Hi Steve,
I heard about Clix Sense. It’s this a serious business?
I will back to you soon about WordPress.
Bye, FP
That is no way to invest your time. Besides, it’s just plain bad karma to be involved in something like that. They have 2 businesses. One is paying you to “click” as much as you can. The other (which is on another site) is scamming unsuspecting new website owners. They offer to get a website 10,000 page views for $49…or something like that. Then they pay people to just click, click, click..they charge more for the traffic than they pay for clickers…sure, the website owners gets 10,000 page views….but the traffic is worthless and they make no sales.
Don’t look for easy and quick ways to make money online. Invest your time and effort into longer term, tried and proven methods
Hallo Steve,
It’s exactly what I was suspicious of.In other word It’s a scam.
In real life for tricks like that sooner or later the guys will go to jail. Not on line, because almost they claim a legal appearance.Me too-and I’m not born yesterday!-I’ve been got cought in scams more than one time:
Recently I bought a$ 3.75 Sample Colon Cleanse and after a while my Visa was debit twice for over 100$!
My son and my networking administrator always they insist that on internet I don’t have to buy nothing or I can be scammed in 98% of cases.
So there is a tiny 2% probability to be right!(May be a little more than that)
This is one the many things refrain me to be on line till now.
For sure the time spent for trial/error like a researcer scientist is not for everyone, even with a university background and you need pounds(or Kilograms)of patience!
All that to fit in that tiny 2%,unless you take a shotcut(… and this is not the way we like!)
Thank you for your proposal as an affiliate of yours. At the moment it’s better before to fix up my place by switching to Wordpress(If I’m able to do that!)
Thanks, Fausto P.
PS:One of the invention I like more it’s the built-in Spell-checker!
Your comments always give me a smile Fausto! Keep at it, keep digging in, and you’ll live your dreams one of these days!
Hi Steve,
In regard to me finding a niche product by accident–I am not as lucky as I thought. After learning more about the external keyword tool, I found those search terms are not being used, so no wonder my site isn’t getting any traffic. I don’t see any way to salvage my site at the moment since I’m definately in a very broad area–exercise dvd’s.
I do have a thought though. Is there any downside to contacting a few of the top ranking sites to ask them if they’d consider becoming an affiliate for my dvd? All they would need is a affiliate link and it could be easy money for them.
What do you think?
Chris
Hi Chris,
That would be a good idea, but here is the problem there. No site with good traffic or anyone with a good list in that area will promote your product until it proves itself. The process goes like this: You develop the site and product. You generate sales for yourself. You tweak and refine the process. Then, when potential JV’s can see your conversion rates, etc. they will consider promoting it. But the ones with good traffic/lists will never promote an unproven product.
Thanks, Steve. It appears I have a lot to think about in terms of how to market my dvd. One thought is to create another dvd tailored to a smaller niche group and use my existing dvd as a bonus.
Merry Christmas!
Chris
I don’t know if this the appropriate area for brainstorming but after researching keywords/phrases with the external keyword tool, I’ve found what could be a manageable niche.
When doing a search for “full body workouts” (which fits my dvd perfectly) I noticed there is a Global Monthly Search Volume of only 33,000 for the top two searches then 8,000 and so on.
I think I could create a new site optimized for the keywords in that list, but am wondering if I will still be competing with the “Additional keywords to consider” area as well? Whereas the search volume there is in the millions. Is that explained in any of your tutorials? If not, could you shed some light on that please?
Thanks again,
Chris
Hi Chris, You are right. Not all competition is equal. In the bigger areas, you will have many high quality pages beating you out for a given keyword even though those specific pages are not even optimized well for the keyword. A keyword with 10,000 competing pages in a very small niche is easy to rank for compared to a long tail keyword with the same 10,000 competitors in a large area.
I’m glad I was right, but wasn’t sure what I was right about! lol
I didn’t quite understand what a “long tail” was. I did a search and found a great explaination–I’m finally able to wrap my head around this and make some sense of it all:)
Thanks…back to work!
Chris
You are welcome Chris. For big areas, the best route is for long term thinking and tons of content creation. For example, my wife and I are working on a new hobby related site. It is not nearly as big as “exercise”, but it’s still pretty big and popular. We know this is a long term project and intend to have literally hundreds of pages of content for the site by this time next year..I’d like to shoot for 500 actually. Creating tons of content is our only real chance of getting traction in this big area. Sure, it will be a lot of work, but if you can get search engine exposure in a big area in which people spend money, the rewards can be awesome!
Steve,
Let me see if I have this straight.
Using the external keyword tool, the search for “strength training for beginners” returned only 720 searches for that “broad” phrase. Of course, in the “Additional keywords to consider” the results were in the millions for words like “strength” and “training”
Does that mean that even if I were to optimize my site for “strength training for beginners” along with all the other keywords for that phrase, I would still be competing with the large sites containing the words “strength” and “training”?
If that’s the case, there really isn’t a “niche” is there? Or does is mean that because of such a large area that even a niche will be very big?
No, it’s not like that. You would not be competing against big sites that focused on “strength of building materials”. Nor would you be competing against sites that focused on “training dogs”. Here’s what I mean. Do a search for “weight training”. Look at those results in google. What I mean is that even though none of those pages about “weight training” are optimized for “strength training”, many of them will still beat out your new page which is optimized well for “strength training”. There are tons of competing sites in that area. Google knows that “strength training” and “weight training” are very closely related. In many cases they will feel that those other sites are more deserving of a higher ranking.
There are many variables, but one of the main factors for them ranking an unoptimized page higher than your optimized page is the number and quality of the established site’s backlinks. I’m not saying getting to the first page is impossible in big areas. I’m just saying that a lot of time and work are involved to get there.
Hi,
I like to work with AdSense EAGERLY,and I know first of all, I must have a website, but I do not have any clue or subject for making a simple website.I need your help SO MUCH,PLEASE!!!
I’m sure Steve will answer this question shortly but in the mean time, you really should check out his free crash course! It has lots of great information that you will find very helpful.
http://www.steveweber.us/course/
Hi, I have a getting started page for building your site here: http://www.steveweber.us/course/course-site-design.htm
This is a page on the site which Chris suggested…Thanks Chris!
But most of all, you just have to dig in and learn it.
Hi Steve,
I was wondering if it’s a good way, using content softwares to make original, fresh
contents for someone like me who does have English as a second language?
For example this one:
No, unfortunately there is no “push button” article writing software that works well. The results will either show as duplicate content or the results look like a six year old, at best wrote it. Your best bet is to pay for articles . You can have fairly good content written for 1 cent per word.
Hello Steve,
I have bad news about my blog:
currencyexchangeoffice.wordpress.com
“This blog has been deactivated because we believe it does not comply with the WordPress.com Terms of Service or advertising policy.
If your blog is designed to promote affiliate links, get rich quick programs, banner ads, consists solely or mostly of duplicate or automatically generated material, or is part of a search engine marketing campaign, WordPress.com is not the place for you. Please use the Export feature to move your content to a more appropriate hosting service.
Occasionally we make mistakes. If you believe we have misclassified your blog, please click here to contact us as soon as possible so we can fix the problem”
At this point it’s advisible to delete the blog?
Or to give same explanation to fix it?
After all my company was Real and Running quite before the advent of Internet.
A blog it’s samething you have to keep alive every day postng rich content, like a diary,a nwspaper:I would like to do that, but unfotunally I don’t have the time and the skill.
Sorry for the trouble!
Bye,FP
Hi Steve, I’ve been a subscriber to your list for a long time now and always enjoy the info you share. I have a question about promoting physical products not the info ones we are all aware of from Clickbank etc.
How do you organize with the company that you want to be an affiliate for them?
Is your commission and payment process worked out on an individual basis or is there another way?
There are so many niches that will require physical products that it would be great to know how it’s done…
Many thanks….Peter
Hi Peter, Your best option is to use Commission Junction. http://www.cj.com I’ve used it for years and highly suggest it. Otherwise, if you find a product you’d like to promote, and it’s not listed with Commission Junction, you have to contact that company to see if they offer any type of program. But honestly, CJ has tens of thousands of products to choose from.
Am trying to plan a website that sells direct downloadable information, coupled with free content. Your material explains well how to market such a thing. You recommend PayPay as a payment method. Where I am having trouble is seeing how to use PayPal to collect payment prior to direct download, without human intervention. Do any of your products explain how to do that?
Hi Jack, for that you would just put the location of your download page in the PayPal buy button setup. There is a place when you create the buy button to tell PayPal where to direct the people to get their download after they purchase.
